BRIEF HISTORY OF USO PENSACOLA
The USO was created in 1941 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to support the thousands of servicemembers who would shortly be entering the armed forces to meet the threat of a world war. The Pensacola branch of the USO was chartered in 1941 and opened in 1942 with the assistance of a congressional appropriation. Eleanor Roosevelt herself came to Pensacola for the grand opening of the newly constructed building on South Spring Street.
Throughout the war years and for decades thereafter, the USO hosted dances, variety shows, informal get-togethers, and always provided the home-away-from-home for which it had become famous around the world.
