WHY THE USO?
- Because 75% of the 30,000 military students who attend training each year at one of our area bases are single teenagers away from home for the first time, and we want them to know that they are welcome and appreciated.
- Because 8% of these young students are women, and there are no identifiable community programs designed to meet their specific needs.
- Because the pay of our married junior enlisted members still falls short of the national average, and our local commissary ranks as No. 2 in the Nation in food stamp redemption.
- Because alcohol is a serious threat and underage drinking can be lethal, healthy alternatives are a must.
- Because at least 30% of the student’s time is free from classes, study, and military duty hours and the majority of that time is spent off base.
- Because the greater Pensacola area is spread out over a large two county area and more than 70% of the young military students have no private transportation. Because area military students and staff donate over 90,000 volunteer hours each year to support local community programs and charitable causes.
- Because these military professionals annually give generously in support of the Combined Federal Campaign which serves many area agencies.
- Because, in a community of more than 400,000 people, 13 % are either active duty or retired military members who are responsible for 20% of our local economy ($1.5 billion a year in revenue), and they deserve our gratitude and support.
- Because service in the Armed Forces has always been a demanding and inherently dangerous profession and we owe our support to those servicing our country.
- And most importantly, because they are our sons and daughters.
