USO Volunteer of the Year Award |

|
Every day USO volunteers across the globe help boost the morale of service members and their families by easing a long journey, bridging a cultural gap, or providing a welcome dose of “home” in a foreign land. With close to seven million troops and families visiting USO centers each year, it would be impossible for us to deliver our programs and services without the efforts of tens of thousands of volunteers who donate nearly 800,000 hours of service annually.
To recognize the outstanding contributions of our volunteers, each quarter USO centers from our four operating regions—Stateside, Europe, Southwest Asia, and the Pacific—nominate a volunteer for Volunteer of the Quarter for their region who has gone above and beyond in supporting our troops and demonstrating their commitment to the USO mission. From this group of outstanding volunteers a Volunteer of the Year is selected for each region, and from these nominees, an organization-wide USO Volunteer of the Year is selected and honored at our annual world gala.
The USO Board of Governors instituted the USO Volunteer of the Year Award in an effort to formally recognize the dedication, hard work, and service of our tens of thousands of volunteers. However, each USO center and region also finds many additional ways to thank these selfless individuals who make little miracles happen every day.

The 2009 Volunteer of the Year, Sgt. Timothy Donovan from USO Vicenza, is a model of service for both the USO and his fellow troops. Not only did he develop and implement numerous morale boosting programs for his colleagues at USO Vicenza, but as a member of the Armed Forces he has volunteered for service twice in Afghanistan.
